Upcoming Events

There are two events planned for Wednesday, October 19th at Brother Bryan/Magnolia Park:

Please come prepared with topics for your committee meetings, and don’t forget your notebook and pen to take notes and minutes so they can be published.

Meet, March, Occupy

Thank you all in advanced for making the choice to walk together with your fellow 99%.  In coordination with the “Global Day of Action“, we’ll be marching on Saturday, October 15th.  This act of solidarity with the other Occupy movements arcoss the world will begin with a meetup starting at 2:00PM at Rail Road Park, Birmingham.  The march will begin at 3:00PM when we will walk together towards 5 Points South where we will sing, chant, and spread awareness.  We will complete the march by walking back to Rail Road Park by 5:00PM.

  • Please bring accoustic, non-amplified musical instruments (drums, guitars) to play while we walk and occupy both Rail Road Park and 5 Points South.
  • There will be signs that can be carried, as well as cardboard and sharpies to express yourself.
  • If you have equipment that can record and livestream content, tweet the URL’s to your channels to @OccupBham and we’ll get them listed on the website tomorrow.

It’s going to be a beautiful day tomorrow with sunny skies and temperatures in high 70′s when we begin our march.  Don’t forget to bring something to snack on and drink as we will cover about 3 miles round trip.

See you tomorrow.

Today’s Meeting / Bulletin

Today, 12 October 2011, the General Assembly met again at 6:00pm to finalize details on the march this coming Saturday.  Roughly 70 to 80 people attended this meeting.

Tomorrow, 13 October 2011, a daylight occupation in front of the Regions Bank Building and the Wells Fargo Center in the city’s financial district will take place from 7:00am to 6:00pm.  The location will be 20th St. N. at 5th Ave. N.   There will be rotations of protesters coming and going throughout the day.  It would be prudent to prepare a statement to the media if you wish to be interviewed, prior to participation.

***FLASH*** The Occupation Has Commensed! [nevermind]

UPDATE: We don’t really know fully what happened. The policeman was favorable, the group that was there in the park before it was officially closed pretty much left on time, and were unaware of us and the movement. For all we know the guy who came after the cop went home did us a big favor by telling us “I’m telling you, they got my wallet, and y’all are about to get robbed”, after he left, I said, that was a threat, we talked about it for a minute, then agreed to go, and were gone in 5 minutes. No further encounters.

Update

Today’s meeting was extraordinary!

The General Assembly met and discussed staging areas, symbolism of the movement, and other concerns over protesting, marching, and occupation.  A lawyer from the Lawyer’s Guild was present and advised everyone on the legalities of what we’re doing and the permits that we will need in order to move forward.

Birmingham is sensational.  Unless you’re using a loudspeaker (or other amplification device) or you want to be in the streets, no permit is required. Media coverage of today’s event has been positive as well.  We will continue to be very weary of taking any action which could jeopardize this positivity.

Today’s Meeting: Details

Brother Bryan was an adamant Civil Rights activist and church pastor in Birmingham.

Today’s (Sunday, 09 October 2011) meeting is on schedule for 1:00pm at Brother Bryan Park.  We have been collaborating about establishing a date for the beginning of the occupation.  Chances are likely that it will begin on the 15th of this month, although, this is unconfirmed.  Bear in mind that the Occupy Wall Street front planned months in advance.

The mayor of Birmingham has expressed his support, noting that the occupation movements have done a wonderful job keeping the demonstrations non-violent and that the city’s law enforcement resources are better spent elsewhere.

Again, this General Assembly meeting will be open to the public and it will be a rather informal pot-luck lunch.  Meat products are not authorized due to Health Department restrictions on serving food.  If, however, you would like to bring your own lunch, then you may eat as much of your own meat as you wish.

There is a decent chance that media organizations will be present as well.  If you do not wish to be on TV, stay away from the cameras and wear hats and sunglasses.  Details and reports from the meeting will be posted as soon as they come in!
